For as long as I can remember, each Sunday, some of the brethren from our congregation would meet before the service for breakfast. This tradition continues to this very day, serving as a time of fellowship, where we discuss the Word of God, as well as current events and other topics as they relate to what God said was going to come to pass.
Nearly nine years ago, I was inspired to start the monthly publication you now hold in your hands. Because of our breakfast meetings, the wait staff at various establishments came to know us as “The Bible Guys.” Hence the name: The Bible Guys Breakfast Club.
Over the years, issues have been produced in Spanish, Russian and even Albanian, but for some time now, the English version has been the only ongoing project. This month, as Bro. Jacob and Sis. Yolanda Garcia began to work on bringing back the Spanish edition, we again dealt with the awkwardness of translating the “Breakfast Club” tag line. After some suggestions were made, and a time of careful thought and prayer, I considered again the publication’s purpose.
I have always liked the name “The Bible Guys,” because it could be taken to mean “the guys in the Bible” (like David, Moses, Isaiah, Jesus, etc.), or “the guys who study and know the Bible today.” That became the inspiration of the new tagline: “of Yesterday and Today.”
Dear friends, as I considered the ancient Bible Guys, do you know what I noticed? There was either no Bible in their days, or they were in the process of writing it and living the events that were being written in the Scripture. Today, we seem to have the idea that ancient Bible Guys were written about, and modern Bible Guys are simply readers. Not so! We are not going to be true Bible Guys if we merely read God’s Word. We are Bible Guys if we keep and do the things He has written for us. When Daniel, Paul, Matthew, Deborah, Abraham, and all the rest are standing before the throne for their faith and their actions, we are not called by God to simply identify them and say, “I read about those guys. Yes, they were truly wonderful men and women of God.” NO! We are called by God to be in that number! Hallelujah!
When the Early Church apostles ordained seven men of wisdom in fulfillment of prophecy, “the Word of God increased” (Acts 6:1-7). When God killed Herod for his blasphemy, “the Word of God grew and multiplied” (Acts 12:20-24). When God confirmed Paul’s ministry, many people believed in God and rejected their heathen ways, “So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed” (Acts 19:13-20).
These instances recorded in the Book of Acts serve as examples to us, that we should be men and women of the Scripture: not only studying it, but living it out and fulfilling it in our lives.
It is not when we carry a Bible around, but when we keep the things written in God’s Word, that we are truly “Bible Guys.” Since the beginning, God has called on each and every one of us to be Bible Guys. Whether we are walking down the street, getting ready for bed, getting up in the morning, or even sitting down at the breakfast table, we must always be men and women of the Bible.
