Sudanese council surpasses Massachusetts court in redefining marriage

Malakal, Sudan - Just over a year after the Massachusetts high court ruled that homosexual marriage was a constitutional right, a Sudanese council of elders found a way to outdo them.

When Mr. Alifi heard a loud noise outside around midnight, he rushed outside to find his goat being abused by Mr. Tombe. Mr. Alifi tied him up, and then called the elders to decide what action should be taken.

Mr. Alifi told the Juba Post newspaper, "They said I should not take him to the police, but rather let him pay a dowry for my goat because he used it as his wife."

They ordered Mr. Tombe to pay Mr. Alifi a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars, a sum equal to $50.

How is married life? Mr. Alifi said, "We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together."
