Southern Baptist Convention statement causes dismissals, resignations

RICHMOND, Va. - 43 people have left the Southern Baptist Convention, 13 of which were dismissed, according to a statement released by the Convention's missionary service May 9th. The action is the result of their refusal to endorse a faith statement that says wives should submit to their husbands and opposes female pastors.

All overseas workers of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board are encouraged to support the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message, the conservative denomination's faith statement.

In a meeting in Framingham, Mass., on May 7-8, trustees of the Richmond-based organization voted to accept the resignations of 20 workers in addition to the dismissals. The workers said the requirement to affirm the statement influenced their decision.
